THE DISASTERS

Released December 18, 2018
HarperTeen

The Breakfast Club meets Guardians of the Galaxy in this YA sci-fi adventure by debut author M. K. England.

In development for television by The CW
A 2020 YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults selection
A Tor.com Best YA Sci-fi/Fantasy book of 2018!
A Winter 2018 IndieNext Top Ten Pick

Hotshot pilot Nax Hall has a history of making poor life choices. So it’s not exactly a surprise when he’s kicked out of the elite Ellis Station Academy in less than twenty-four hours. But Nax’s one-way trip back to Earth is cut short when a terrorist group attacks the Academy.

Nax and three other washouts escape—barely—but they’re also the sole witnesses to the biggest crime in the history of space colonization. And the perfect scapegoats.

On the run, Nax and his fellow failures plan to pull off a dangerous heist to spread the truth. Because they may not be “Academy material,” and they may not even get along, but they’re the only ones left to step up and fight.

Full of high-stakes action, subversive humor, and underdogs becoming heroes, this YA sci-fi adventure is perfect for fans of Illuminae, Heart of Iron, or the cult classic TV show Firefly and is also a page-turning thrill ride that anyone—not just space nerds—can enjoy.

The Disasters addresses the following topics that you may want a heads up about:

○ Anxiety: Two characters deal with anxiety, and it is openly discussed on the page. One character has a panic attack on page. Another displays anxious thought patterns.

○ Transphobia (brief, systemic, off screen): Before the events of the book, a transgender character was removed from a competitive sport at the national level due to being transgender. There is a brief discussion of how that particular country handles gender on legal documents.

○ Harry Potter Reference: Regrettably, this book was written in 2014, bought by the publisher in 2016, and published in 2018, and so it contains a brief, sideways sort of reference to Harry Potter. Wish I could change it, but it is what it is at this point.

SPELLHACKER

Released January 21, 2020
HarperTeen

From the author of The Disasters, this genre-bending YA fantasy heist story is perfect for fans of Marie Lu and Amie Kaufman.

In Kyrkarta, magic—known as maz—was once a freely available natural resource. Then an earthquake released a magical plague, killing thousands and opening the door for a greedy corporation to make maz a commodity that’s tightly controlled—and, of course, outrageously expensive.

Which is why Diz and her three best friends run a highly lucrative, highly illegal maz siphoning gig on the side. Their next job is supposed to be their last heist ever.

But when their plan turns up a powerful new strain of maz that (literally) blows up in their faces, they’re driven to unravel a conspiracy at the very center of the spellplague—and possibly save the world.

No pressure.

Note from M.K.: SPELLHACKER is the story of a heist gone wrong in a futuristic world with magic, starring a girl named Diz who is basically a cactus secretly filled with marshmallow. Diz is joined by her NB childhood friend Remi (who she is definitely not dating), her fierce bestie Ania, and her dad-friend Jaesin. I love the magic system, setting, and found family dynamics in this book, and I hope you do, too!

Kirkus Review

Readers will want to buckle in for this high-speed, bighearted sci-fi/fantasy adventure.”

Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

Fresh, inventive fun that will leave readers hoping for sequels.”

Jess Rothenberg

author of The Kingdom

“A bold and futuristic thrill ride with a dazzling blend of magic, mayhem, friendship, and heart.”

ALA Booklist

“A humorous mix of SF and fantasy with a diverse cast of strong personalities … [and] action that carries on right to the end.”

Booksellers and Librarians:

“In our YA world of #ownvoices works and growing availability of LGBTQIA stories, SPELLHACKER is a must read. The female/nonbinary romance, found family, unique magic system, and heart of this novel left me completely spellbound. SPELLHACKER packs a fantastic one-two punch of comedic and emotional complexity that will grab you by page one. Read this book!!”
Cassie Schulz, Brazos Bookstore

“Spellhacker is a fun, spunky romp through an exciting, technologically savvy world. […] A dazzling story about friendship that is relatable and emotional. Spellhacker will hack its way into your heart with its wondrous storyteller and need for human connection.”
Anna Rose Carleton, The Well-Read Moose

Even better than their first book and I genuinely live to recommend this author to new YA readers. Nothing but action and a diverse cast of characters that always feel so true to real life in authenticity and diversity.”
Mary Noble-Ellis, Jefferson-Madison Regional Library

“I LOVED The Disasters and I love Spellhacker perhaps even more. […] I couldn’t put this book down and I can’t wait to put it into the hands of our teen patrons.”
Alyson Champion, librarian

“A twisty, well written science fiction thriller.”
Kathryn Neal, Skiatook Library/TCCL

Spellhacker addresses the following topics that you may want a heads up about:

○ Pandemic and Chronic Illness: Before the events of the book, an event called the Spellplague killed off millions of people in the world of Spellhacker. The effects of this pandemic are still felt in the time the story takes place. The few who contract the spellplague and survive deal with a life-shortening chronic illness. This was written pre-COVID-19 and released just before lockdown began.

○ Death of a parent: Three of the four main characters were orphaned by the spellplague 10 years before the events of the book.

○ PTSD: The main POV character experienced the loss of her parent in a particularly traumatic way and experiences PTSD as a result.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: NO GUTS, NO GLORY

Titan Books

The official prequel novel to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the hotly anticipated action-adventure game developed by Eidos-Montréal and published by Square Enix.

The official prequel novel to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the hotly anticipated action-adventure game developed by Eidos-Montréal and published by Square Enix.

Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Racoon and Groot. They’re the Guardians of the Galaxy, turning a tidy profit as heroes for hire—or, they will be if Peter Quill can get his act together. After he botches the most critical part of their latest mission—getting paid—his newly assembled crew is close to ditching him for good. Now he needs a big payday, fast.

When an old acquaintance shows up offering a whole lot of units for a field trip to Peter’s past, it’s a no-brainer. Thirteen years ago, Peter fought the Chitauri alongside the Resistance on Mercury to prevent an invasion of Earth. Now it’s time to go back. The old Resistance base has a squatter, and it’s up to the Guardians to ‘gently escort’ them off the premises… and unmask a wartime traitor while they’re at it.

But war is heavy, man, and the Galactic War screwed up each of the Guardians in their own special ways. The brand-new team is barely hanging together, and the mission brings up all kinds of bad memories. It’s make or break time for the Guardians, and they do so love breaking things…

Just hopefully not each other.

Guardians of the Galaxy: No Guts, No Glory addresses the following topics that you may want a heads up about:

War, PTSD, and wartime casualties: The book deals heavily with the Galactic War in both the past and present. Some characters struggle with the loss of friends and comrades, actively on the page. Others struggle with it after the fact. Take care.

Death of a spouse and child (past): A character reflects extensively on the loss of their spouse and young child in the early days of the war, before the beginning of the book.

Death of a parent (past): A character briefly mentions the death of their mother, before the beginning of the book.

THE ONE TRUE

ME & YOU

March 1, 2022
Wednesday Books/Macmillan

Writing as Remi K. England

Most Anticipated by: Buzzfeed * Lambda Literary * LGBTQ Reads * Bustle * Book Riot * Autostraddle * The Nerd Daily * Epic Reads * Frolic

One small fandom convention. One teen beauty pageant.
One meet cute waiting to happen.

Up and coming fanfic author Kaylee Beaumont is internally screaming at the chance to finally meet her fandom friends in real life and spend a weekend at GreatCon. She also has a side quest for the weekend:

* Try out they/them pronouns to see how it feels
* Wear more masculine-presenting cosplay
* Kiss a girl for the first time

It’s… a lot, and Kay mostly wants to lie face down on the hotel floor. Especially when her hometown bully, Miss North Carolina, shows up in the very same hotel. But there’s this con-sponsored publishing contest, and the chance to meet her fandom idols… and then, there’s Teagan.

Pageant queen Teagan Miller (Miss Virginia) has her eye on the much-needed prize: the $25,000 scholarship awarded to the winner of the Miss Cosmic Teen USA pageant. She also has secrets:

* She loves the dresses but hates the tiaras
* She’s a giant nerd for everything GreatCon
* She’s gay af

If Teagan can just keep herself wrapped up tight for one more weekend, she can claim the scholarship and go off to college out and proud. If she’s caught, she could lose everything she’s worked for. If her rival, Miss North Carolina, has anything to do with it, that’s exactly how it’ll go down.

When Teagan and Kay bump into one another the first night, sparks fly. Their connection is intense—as is their shared enemy. If they’re spotted, the safe space of the con will be shattered, and all their secrets will follow them home. The risks are great… but could the reward of embracing their true selves be worth it?

The One True Me and You addresses the following topics that you may want a heads up about:

○ Gender dysphoria: Kay is exploring their gender identity and expresses some gender-related discomfort at times. There is one instance of microagressions from their mother. Ultimately, they are happy being nonbinary and feel comfortable coming into their identity and celebrating who they are.

○ Death of a parent by suicide (off-screen, before the story): Teagan experiences the loss of her mother as a child. This death by suicide resulted in the character going to therapy and ultimately pursuing art therapy as a future career. A pageant judge springs a question about it on her during her pageant interview.

○ Homophobia and transphobia: The “villain” (inasmuch as there is a villain) makes a few anti-LGBTQ+ comments. Teagan hides her identity because of the general anti-queerness of the pageant world. The overall tone of the book is light and LGBTQ+ positive and affirming, though.

Brief racism/colorism: There is a brief discussion of racism and colorism in the beauty pageant system.

A simple job
Serenity is bound for the planet Kerry with a hold full of sealed, unidentified cargo for the planet’s highest-ranking nobleman. Some fine hospitality
Obliged to stick around while Inara is with a client—and hoping to score future employment—the crew settles in. The liquor flows freely at court, and there’s food, entertainment, and comfortable lodgings to enjoy. Everyone is thrilled but Zoë. Her gut says something is off.

A vicious massacre
When the duke’s estate is attacked in the middle of the night, Mal sends Serenity to safety while he and Zoë investigate. What they find turns the whole story of Kerry upside-down. Revolution is brewing, and each of them will have to decide where to make their stand, even if it lands them on opposite sides…

hIS FORBIDDEN PRINCE

Serialized Oct 2022–Mar 2023, now complete
StoryLoom

Is it enemies-to-lovers… or just straight up enemies?

Every year, the leadership of the Union’s worlds send their teenage children for a year of immersive cultural exchange and diplomatic training at the luxurious Leonidas Estate. In reality, it’s a year of spying, scheming, and romancing—er, “forging alliances.” Your year has come. Try not to screw it up. And definitely don’t fall in love with the wrong boy.

StoryLoom was an interactive fiction platform that allowed authors to tell visual novel-style stories where player choices mattered. The platform shut down on February 29, 2024 and this story is no longer available. I will be re-publishing it in another form.

CURE FOR THE COMMON CULT

Serialized March–September 2023, now complete!
StoryLoom

What happens to all the minions when an evil cult leader is finally vanquished? They move to the country, become farmers, and fall in love, obviously.

You are Oaklin, finally free to make your own way in the world now that your cult leader’s mind control spell is broken. This is your story of farming, flirting, healing… and running witchy errands for the ghost that lives in your house. Just make sure NO ONE finds out where you came from… and that you NEVER use magic again. (NOTE: Choose your own avatar, gender, and love interest.)

Love interest info: You will be presented with three possible love interests throughout the story. Due to the limited nature of the Storyloom platform, I’m forced to simplify things more than I’d like. In chapter 1 when you’re asked who you’re into romantically, you have the option to choose “women,” “men,” or “into anyone.” For either of the first two options, you’ll be presented with three women or three men. For the third, you’ll be presented with a man, a woman, and a nonbinary love interest.

While I wish I could add more nuanced options here, the structure of the platform just doesn’t really allow for it at this point. Please feel free to interpret any character as trans/nonbinary and with whatever nuanced orientation you wish.

You will have the option to have an asexual relationship, as well as a polyamorous one—I really tried to allow for an aromantic/queerplatonic situation, but the coding structure available at the time just Did Not Work with all the other options. I’m so sorry, aro and aroace friends!

Pronouns: Due to choices in StoryLoom being limited to three options at the time of this story’s writing, your pronoun choices are limited to he/him, she/her, and they/them. Apologies for not being able to offer more options!

○ Past trauma from mind-control: As it says in the story description: you were mind controlled by an evil cult leader in the past and this story deals with the fallout. Take care if those themes are rough for you.

○ Anxiety and panic attacks: Because, you know, the mind control trauma. There are some on-screen moments of anxiety which the main character is helped through with coping techniques and support from friends.

NOVA ACADEMY

September–December 2023, now complete!

(3) Never, under any circumstances, ask what happened to Sergeant Zavis.

Instead, you’ve quickly risen through the lower schools as top of class—and Nova Academy is your chance to make it for real. Go too hard and you’ll burn out. Piss off the wrong people and you’ll get kicked out. Fall for another cadet and you’ll be forced to hide your relationship. Spend your time wisely… and that squadron spot is YOURS.

 ○ Love interest info: At the beginning of chapter 1, players will choose whether they want their love interest to be male, female, or nonbinary, and will be presented with two love interests of their chosen gender throughout the story.

Pronouns and gender presentation: Players are able to customize their avatar with one of three body types for varying gender presentations. Due to choices in StoryLoom being limited to three options at the time of this story’s writing, your pronoun choices are limited to he/him, she/her, and they/them. Apologies for not being able to offer more options!

○ Main character death: There will be several points in the story where it’s possible for the player character to die. The story will always then loop back to the moment immediately before the choice that lead to that death so the player can choose a different option.

This book is overall quite lighthearted and has a joyful ending, but a quick heads-up if you need it:

 ○ Struggles with orientation and internalized biphobia/homophobia: One of the characters’ entire arc centers on her being able to embrace her sexuality openly while still living the country girl life she loves.

Religious trauma: One character is a gay Christian who is secure in his faith but struggles with the fact that his family (kindly, lovingly, gently) want him to come back to church, be forgiven, and change his ways. Chapter 18 is where the bulk of this emotional processing takes place.
